I think both the problem and the great thing about digital photography is that absolutely anyone can go out and take photos, then very easily edit and upload them to places like Deviantart. It's great because there is very little money outlay, you can buy a decent camera for $200, and computer editing is free. Which means it's accessible to almost everyone.

The problem is that it's universally accessible. It's very easy to simply take happy snaps, without any thought to composition, lighting and so on. So there are so many bad photos out there on Deviantart when they're actually not art. They're just someone with a camera taking photos.

Taking real artful photography is more difficult. It takes more effort and thought into what you're doing and how you're doing it. I'm the first to say that although I only submit what I feel is the best of my photography, many are not great. But I try to take beautiful interesting shots and I think my effort shows. It annoys me when deviants submit photos with what seems to be no thought whatsoever. It just results in bad photos and that (in my opinion) is not artful and as such does not belong on this site.

It's all about the effort and the work that the photography puts into their work. You need to look critically at the photos you're taking and say "how could this be better, is it even a good subject, how's the lighting and the composition, am I on the correct camera settings". Then when you get home you look at the photo again with the same critical lens, adjusting things slightly in photoshop to get the best picture possible. There's probably more that needs to be done that I haven't learnt yet, especially when you have a DSLR and need to start thinking about different lenses and so on. THAT's how you get a good photograph: by learning and thinking critically. None of this taking a photo of a subject without thought and effort.

It's the difference between this shot:

(I took this one. Very badly thought out shot)

And this one:

This one is so much better.

The two photos could be of the exact same flower. The difference is skill and effort.
